Hey, where’s the “File” command?! Adjusting to Office 2007 & 2010

This article is for all of my friends out there who are serious, power Microsoft Office users. They’re the Overlords of Office, the Wizards of Word, Excellent at Excel. They were, that is, until Microsoft released Office 2007.

Suddenly all their speed and productivity skidded to a teeth-grinding halt as these former “Masters-Of-All-Things-Office” now have to learn the new names to do the same old things, search for common tools in the new “Ribbon” user interface that replaced the simple classic Menu Bar (and takes up more window space), and remember to convert their new .DOCX files back to .DOC files so people who did not buy 2007 can still read them. (And if you’re looking for a way to reinstall the toolbar, Microsoft has plainly stated they do not and will not offer a “Classic” toolbar.)

If you fall in this category, here’s something I found that will keep your productivity high while you learn the nuances (or nuisances) of Office 2007.  Some very creative cats in Eastern Europe (who were probably sick of having to deal with Office 2007 too) came up with this nifty little application called UBitMenu

UBit's Menu tab in Office 2007's Ribbon

What UBitMenu does is it adds a “Menu” tab to the Ribbon. When you select it, it will reveal the old, familiar, pre-2007 Menu and Toolbars you are so fond of.

You can go to http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/ and download it on your personal computer for free. But I think you should give these guys something for their effort, and $14 is not a lot of sardines for such a great app.

May 21, 2010 Update! Never ask a cat to do geography homework!  UBit is a Swiss company, in Central Europe, not eastern.  Jörg Grabinski from UBit was kind enough to contact me and let me know.   Merci vilmal, Jörg!
