Silverlight’s Offline Browser “Bloat”

low disk space

“Off-line” browsers are a neat way to look at streaming videos without having to connect to the internet.  But, if you should ever decide to uninstall the application, all those video files won’t necessarily be deleted with the browser and you can find yourself with a computer bloated with these files.

Most off-line browser applications out there use Microsoft’s Silverlight as their “engine”. Unfortunately, Silverlight–like many of Microsoft’s software–does a crummy job of cleaning up after itself. Recently, a client  ran out of disk space because the deleted Silverlight app never deleted the 10GB of videos it stored on their computer!

Now there are a lot of free “maid” utility software that does a nifty job of cleaning your computer of clutter. (Too bad it can’t clean up the clutter in the garage!) One utility I like to use is Piriform’s CCleaner (I think that first C is for “Crap”).  However, most of these won’t clean up after Silverlight. That means you’ll have to clean it yourself.

How to clean up Silverlight’s stored (or cache) files

  1. If you haven’t deleted it yet, open your offline browser application.
  2. Move your mouse to an unused area of the browser’s window, and right-mouse button-click to get the Silverlight context menu to appear.
  3. Select Silverlight
  4. Select the Application Storage tab. That’s where you’ll find all the files it’s hoarding.
  5. Click Delete All… and confirm.

Now you got all of your used space back!
