Everybody Loves Pi (Day)

March 14, 2014 at 12:01 am 6 comments

Today is Pi Day. (“Say Computer Cat! You misspelled pie!”)

Nope. This is not the kind of pie you eat, but the kind engineers and scientists love to use in their work. Pi is a number that is the result of the ratio of a circle’s girth (or circumference) to that  circle’s cross-section (or diameter). In other words:

Pi = Circumference / diameter.

Pi is a number that never has an ending and can’t be expressed as a fraction. That’s why they use the Greek symbol,  π,  as a shorthand for this unique value.  Pi is approximately 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510…

Why March 14th?

Well the first few digits of the value of  Pi is 3.14. And March is the 3rd month of the year and today is the 14th day of March: 3/14, get it?

How You Can Celebrate Pi Day

www.PiDay.org, the “Official Pi Day website” has some interesting suggestions

Change the numbers on the clocks to read in radians using Pi. (Ask your math teacher what’s a radian.)

Show your mad math skillz by converting everyday things into pi. How old are you in Pi?  What’s the price of gas in Pi? It boggles the imagination!

Got that idea a few years back from one of my friends. There’s a community of lovers of Pi day. So what sort of preparations do you think are going on to let the world witness this day? The binary day passed, a one in a thousand this year, without a hint.

Hi RenXRen and arigato gozaimashita for your comment!

One thing I learned about engineers and techie-types is they looove free food. Whether it’s doughnuts in the Break Room or lunch leftovers from the executive meeting, they’ll swarm like sharks.

So for the next Pi Day, why not have a whole pie in the break room with a note “Happy Pi Day”?

(Personally, I like to remove all the knives just to see how creative people get trying to “divide pi” with a spoon!)

Haha the reason for the date really tickle me because when I came across the post my first question was “since when did we have a pi day” lol(:

😀 Usually it’s the engineers and math geeks that recognize Pi Day, but it’s a good excuse to bring desserts to the office!

  • Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get
that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appearance.
I must say you have done a fantastic job with this.
In addition, the blog loads super fast for me on Internet
    explorer. Superb Blog!

Thank you for the kind “sardine”. I try to make my site where humans don’t need high-speed internet just to view it. If you have any topics you’d like to hear about on The Computer Cat’s Corner, let me know!
