From “Ugh!” to “Ahhh!”: Making Windows 8 more Windows 7 / XP friendly

Windows 8 is great (pause) …if you have a touch screen …if you have never used another version of Windows before …if you don’t mind not having a START button …if you don’t use professional software …if your boss doesn’t mind your productivity dropping having to do three things on Windows 8 that only required one click on XP …if you rely heavily on the keyboard than the mouse.

These are some of the grumblings my Human hears from clients who bought computers with Windows 8 (and the upgraded 8.1).  And the IT geeks who have to support hundreds of computers  have raised their voices (and closed their corporate pocketbooks) regarding Windows 8 enough to get Microsoft’s to make some interesting changes this year. But those changes don’t help people currently with Windows 8.

If you’re stuck with Windows 8, but want the look and function of Windows 7 or XP, there are several companies that offer clever software to do this.

I’ve played with most of them.  But the one I like best is called Classic Shell.  Not only does it gives you the choice to make the Windows 8 Desktop look like a classic Windows 7 or even a “classic-er” Window XP Desktop, one nice feature it has is the option to start up immediately in the classic Desktop. “Metro? I don’ see no stinkin’ Metro!

Example of Classic Shell on Windows 8

Believe it or not, this is Windows 8 using Classic Shell to look like a Windows 7 Desktop.

Classic Shell doesn’t charge for using their software, but I highly encourage you to donate on their web site,,  as a way of saying “Thank you, for saving my sanity“, and to help them continue to make useful software for us.
