If you get a call about your computer, IT’S A SCAM !

UPDATE:  In addition to the scam of the bad guys calling you, there is a new type of “scareware” that’s appeared.  It pops-up a message on your screen saying your computer has been infected and provides a phone number for you to call them so they can “fix” your infected computer–for several hundred dollars. The rest of their scam is just like my article below.  The Computer Cat says to watch out for these “rats”!

If you get a call about your computer, IT’S A SCAM !

There has been an increase in these phone scams, and they prey mostly on the elderly and the young computer owners. Other phone scams include: calls that a loved one is in jail and needs money for bail, or buying an “extended” warranty. These scams are big business and they do all kinds of things (like knowing your name and other personal information) to make you believe in them.

Here is a very good article on DailyKos.com that talks about those computer phone scams and how they take your money–and damage your computer. Also check out what people shared in the article’s Comments section.

My top 6 favorite Comments were titled:

  1. “This came up here a while back…” (this is an actual recording of the scam in progress)

  2. “Response that hits home”

  3. “My 80 year old mom”

  4. “Yep, we got over 6 calls so far”

  5. “I’ve posted my method”

Have you or someone you know had a similar experience? How did you handle it? Share your story with us!

Take it from The Computer Cat: no company will ever call you to tell you your personal computer has problems. It’s a waste of their time and money. You’re supposed to call them!
