Help! My keyboard is possessed!

Here’s a quick Computer Cat Tip about keyboards for those of you out there who use more than four fingers for typing:

Every now and then my human will be typing a report or something, when suddenly some of the keys start typing weird things.  Things like

  • Quotation marks won’t appear around a word–only in front of the word.
  • Instead of an English O, the German Ö appears.
  • Nothing happens when you press a key.

Usually this happens to my human when it’s late at night or when I’m snoozing in her arms while she’s trying to type.  At first the only apparent way to fix it was to restart the entire computer.

If you ever had this problem, there’s an easier way.  The cause (and the cure) are hotkeys.  Hotkeys are the result of pressing certain keys together to have the computer do something.  Some of the most common hotkeys that people know about are:

  • <CTRL> (By the way, “<CTRL>” means “press the CTRL button”.)  for Save
  • <CTRL>C for Copy
  • <CTRL>A for Select All
  • <ALT><F4> for Close open window (Alright, some of you may not have known about this.)

There’s also a lot of hotkeys that Microsoft doesn’t advertise, and one of them is real easy to activate if you’re a real touch-typist.

This hidden hotkey is the <CTRL><SHIFT> combination. These two keys are easily pressed if your fingers happen to be resting a little too hard on the keyboard (from fatigue or a heavy cat).  What this hotkey does is changes the keyboard between US to International symbols!

If this starts happening to you, try using the <CTRL><SHIFT> hotkey and see if your keyboard returns to normal.
