The Computer Cat Corner is mobile-friendly!

The Computer Cat Corner is mobile-friendly!

As of April 21, 2015, Google made an announcement that web sites appearing on their pages are going to be ranked by whether they are optimized for mobile device viewing. Mobile devices include iPads, Droids, Kindles, Nooks, iPhones, tablets, phablets, and cell phones with Internet access.

Google’s search competitors, Microsoft Bing and Yahoo.com, have not said if they will be doing the same.  But in Technology it’s always the case of “Monkey-see-Monkey-do”. So expect these monkeys to copycat Google’s move real soon.

While having computers in a home are still looked at as a luxury, smartphones, on the other hand, are looked at by people as a necessity.  It’s a matter of opinion if whether that’s true or not. Also, 3 out of 4 people who don’t own a computer do own a smartphone with Internet. So you’re looking at most of today’s Internet viewing being done using portable devices with smaller screens, than with a regular laptop or desktop computer.

Is My Site “Mobile-Friendly”?

If you’re using a host site (like  WordPress, Blogger, or Joomla) and you’re using one of their “pre-set templates” for your website (most people on the web don’t code their own websites), the current templates are automatically mobile-device friendly.

However, if your website was custom-built and more than 6 years old, it’s probably not mobile-friendly. If you’re concerned about your search ranking, you’ll need to get your entire site updated.

If you want to see how your website stacks up to Google’s new ranking rules, you can check it by going to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ .

Lindsay Siberman has a great article (and not because I’m a fan of the musical group Digital Underground) that discusses the Great Google Change. You can read it on https://www.tapp.com/new/this-major-google-change-will-affect-your-site .

      Hello Arup.
Google’s announcement will cause worry only for people who rely on page rankings to get new viewer readership. In spite of your target audience, if your site doesn’t meet Google’s new standard, it will get dropped in the ranks. Go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ to find out if your site passes.

Dad learned about this the hard way making a webpage about his timeline.

Google has abandoned the not be evil motto. It is all shareholders running it which makes it like a ship without a rudder.

Google has no direction and doesn ‘t know what they are doing nor care.

Welcome to Agenda 21 and the global corporation takeover. Do you like it?
