Support your local shop on Saturday November 26th!

With Occupy Wallstreet protests across America and people generally tired of seeing the gap between the 99% and the 1% getting wider, here’s something you can do that will hit the 1% where it hurts — in their pocketbooks!   Show those Fat Cats your purchasing-power muscle by buying from your local small shops and businesses this Saturday November 26th.

You might have been seeing commercials recently on T.V. talking about “Small Business Saturday”.  Ironically, this event was created by American Express in 2010. Of course AmEx’s main objective was to “stimulate” more people and shops into using and accepting American Express cards. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good idea.

Here’s a few things we can do to make Small Business Saturday even better:

  • Use cash. Credit cards get money from you (in interest & penalties) and from the store you used the card in (shops must pay “merchants fees”– even for debit cards). By using cash, that money that would have gone into the credit card company’s pocket will now go where it’s needed most– in your and the store owner’s pocket!
  • Include local diners. Some of the best food come from those “Mom & Pop” restaurants. After shopping, show them some love and stop and get something to eat. (Don’t forget to bring home a “Kitty bag” for me!)
  • Don’t just stop with “traditional” stores. Specialty stores are often small businesses created from the love the owner has in what he’s selling. Shoe repair, cleaners, car washes, bookstores (and comic book stores too!), music stores, the electronic shop where you buy computer parts (hee, hee), and other niche shops are great places to visit this Saturday.
  • Make this an annual event. Pass the word to others. And just like “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”, we can make the first Saturday after Thanksgiving an annual tradition.
